Consider: as a midshipman, he allows the Marie Gallante to sink, partly from circumstances beyond his control and partly because he failed to see about the holes in the hull. To recompense, he refuses to take the credit for the Spanish ship catching fire. Also: he sets Doughty free and buys his 'forgiveness' with 8 million Spanish pounds. Or something. But in both these cases, he will answer only to himself, not to the criticsm of others. I'd argue that it's much harder to face public censure as a failure than it is to make your own amends, harsh as you may deem those amends to be. The point is that he does not have the balls to face up to external criticism, only internal censure. Please, argue with me. I realise it's not that clear cut, but this is just a thought that struck me today. Doesn't mean I love him any less :)
