Coward

1. Solitude would be the most wonderful thing in the world right now. I need it like NSW needs rain.

2. Hornblower is a coward. Consider: as a midshipman, he allows the Marie Gallante to sink, partly from circumstances beyond his control and partly because he failed to see about the holes in the hull. To recompense, he refuses to take the credit for the Spanish ship catching fire. Also: he sets Doughty free and buys his 'forgiveness' with 8 million Spanish pounds. Or something. But in both these cases, he will answer only to himself, not to the criticsm of others. I'd argue that it's much harder to face public censure as a failure than it is to make your own amends, harsh as you may deem those amends to be. The point is that he does not have the balls to face up to external criticism, only internal censure. Please, argue with me. I realise it's not that clear cut, but this is just a thought that struck me today. Doesn't mean I love him any less :)

A/N: I think it was [livejournal.com profile] inlovewithnight who was asking for list fic like about two weeks ago. And it's kind of a stand-in fic for [livejournal.com profile] quigonejinn since I still haven't finished her fic which was due today *guilt* And RL has run off with both my muse and my time, so this might be it for a little while, not that I ever ficced much to begin with!

[livejournal.com profile] quietcontrary: Two months ago, [livejournal.com profile] phantomsangel and I had the brilliant idea of writing the 132 LJ moods as drabbles in the Hornblower fandom. Then we realised that 132 drabbles is a lot and we're kind of out of breath after 42 of them *g*

[livejournal.com profile] phantomsangel: We wrote these mostly late at night (well, for me) and can neither confirm nor deny being under the influence of any substances whilst writing. Please be kind, as writing 143 (Whatever) odd drabbles does odd things to the mind.

So - we present drabbles Accomplished through to Ecstatic. Ratings G through to R; het, gen and slash.

Drabbles this way!

(If you'd like to comment on an individual drabble, feel free to do so as a reply to the drabble itself. That way it keeps things nice and tidy and pretty!)

(Also, if you'd like to take up part of the A-Z of Hornblower drabbles, or are vaguely interested or something, leave a comment here!)
quietcontrary: (Horatio & Archie kissme)
Horatio is not a man of words. They come to him painfully and slowly, just rough sketches of the storms that fill his mind. Archie's words fill the night. He talks of the sea, of their next shore leave, of the first flying fish he saw, of togetherness, of love. Horatio lies with his eyes open in the darkness, hands linked beneath his curls, and sees the pictures that Archie paints.

When Archie's spoken thoughts trail off, the silence stretches between them like taffy, soft and golden and sweet. Horatio doesn't want to spoil it with his clumsy words, but the restlessness within him will not fade. He shifts in his hammock and feels Archie move in response. He wants to say - but he doesn't know what he wants to say, so he says "Archie," very softly, treasuring the taste of the sound in his mouth.

And Archie sighs a little, smiling, and muses over the fact that Horatio can express more in the simple act of saying his name than he can in a whole night of conversation.

Are there even Archie fans on my flist? Or are we all Bush (and Hornblower) girls? *g*

And went downhill from there...

I'm such a bad person omg.

(There was a discussion in [livejournal.com profile] navalchronicle about how if Bush were a dog, he'd be a black mutt with a some newfoundland in him, and I came across a newfoundland dog picture and omg. *l* Talk about one-track mind!)

1. Inspired by the awesomeness of the [livejournal.com profile] 1character pieces by [livejournal.com profile] randomalia and [livejournal.com profile] quigonejinn.
2. All about Hornblower, cos I couldn't do Bush or Archie now without thinking of theirs! <3
3. A great way to not do my essay/not clean my bathroom.
4. Just one huge bit of unofficial randomness.
5. Bookverse + spoilers cos I'm a book-ho, k.
6. Meant to be completely gen but Bush kept sneaking in the back door O.o
7. The most pointless thing I've written in a long time, even including the essay I wrote last week :/

I'm behind in comments, email, fic, study, essays and everything else! But fairy tales are bugging me anyway. I have to admit that I'm a huge romantic sap. I also love happy endings. I can live with bittersweet endings, but I really do prefer the happy ones. Fairy tales just seem to provide all that, while being nicely obliquely gorey at the same time. I like that in a narrative form.

There are so many bits to fairy tales that I want to pick up and adapt to Hornblower stories. Hornblower/Bush, mainly, because I have a one track mind, but Hornblower gen, as well. Hmm. I love the elements to fairy tales. It's also like a rubick's cube, trying to see how I could fit in the HH dynamic. Never mind that I suck at rubick's cubes. Apparently there's a mathematical formula to help you solve them quickly. Anyway. Fairy tales.

Cinderella, for one. Bush after Sheerness, man. He's lived a hard life (no ugly step-sisters, though)* but at his most unhappy moment, after he loses his foot, (Cinders crying at the fireplace) he gets his biggest reward, a captaincy. (Cinderella goes to the ball.) But what happens at the ball is that the clock strikes twelve and she has to run away, and what happens to Bush is that he gets posted at Sheerness and gets shoved behind a desk somewhere, far away from the sea. And even if the prince came looking for him with shoe in hand, it wouldn't fit anymore because he's lost his foot, he's not the man he used to be. (And Cinderella isn't the same girl that was dancing at the ball, either; stripped of her gown and her coach, she must be more subdued, less confident.) So can the prince still love the man he fell in love with, even though he's a different person now? And because this is a fairy tale and I'm a sap, the answer is yes, of course - they find that there is more to Bush than just the sea and his ships (gasp, shock horror) - he is that grim determination and utter faithfulness, the lack of fear and the complete loyalty. But of course he belongs at sea on a ship, so he goes to live at sea with his prince and they live happily ever after.

Too bad I have to go study now!!

* ETA: (I'm an idiot for overlooking this.) No ugly step-sisters but he does have three presumably unmarried sisters who he supports pretty much for his whole adult life. This seals it. Bush is Cinderella.

(I REALLY need to go study! And also perhaps have a lab test done on what's in the water, cos I can't believe I just came up with that conclusion. O.o)

From a fangirl's point of view, it's becoming very inconvenient that Bush doesn't have a canon birthday. Cos, y'know, birthdays are such lovely things - surprise parties, messy cream cakes, candlelit dinners for two, unwrapping presents in the dark...

Since CSF didn't provide us with a date, I think we should just go ahead and provide one for him *g*

Firstly:

[Poll #711519]

I'll collect up the results in a day or two and then we can vote on which month of the most popular season. Or, y'know, if you have a particularly good date in mind, speak up! :D

Title: The Road To The Sea
Rating: G, gen
Notes: I was chatting with [livejournal.com profile] phantomsangel today about Hornblower's parents and this bunny bit.
Concrit: would be the bestest thing ever, since I actually tried for this to fit into canon. Also, I would love your thoughts on the issue of Hornblower's parents (What were they like? Were they loving? Distant? Did he ever know his mother?) and on how and why he went to sea.

This hardly qualifies as a HAW post, but I'm all scatterbrained today. Anyway. I have this thing about the Care Bears. It would have to be my most favourite cartoon ever, and I mourned a little when my mum decided that my old Care Bear tapes should be handed down to my little cousins a few years ago. Care Bears make me happy!

Please insert tongue firmly into cheek before reading :)

Name: Horry Bear
In a past life, he was: Grumpy Bear
Mission: He shows us that even if we're grumpy, we're still loved, especially if we're a hot lieutenant/captain with spiffy naval skills, exceptional luck and more sex appeal than a bucket of pheremone spray.
Personality: Cranky, except when he's not. And extremely glompable.
On Bush Bear: He loves Bush Bear's faithfulness and knows that he can always depend on him. He wishes that Bush Bear would get over his shyness/status hang up, though, and just jump him one day.
On Archie Bear: He needs Archie Bear to help lighten his outlook on the world, and to stop him mutating into a soggy, gloomy raincloud. Sometimes all that cheerfulness can really get on his nerves, though.

Name: Bush Bear
In a past life, he was: Bashful Heart Bear
Mission: He's the personification of OMG-I-Not-So-Secretly-Want-To-Jump-My-Captain Love.
Personality: An extremely capable First Lieutenant who scares the living bejesus out of his junior officers, the middies and the rest of the crew with his huge bellow and tough mofo attitude. Within twenty feet of Horry Bear, though, he turns into a meek, mild and lovestruck bear, who's totally whipped by his captain - and loves it.
On Horry Bear: To Bush Bear, Horry Bear is somewhat like England. There are other countries out there, and he's even been to some of them, but don't even bother trying to convince him that anything's better. He loves Horry Bear like whoa. Their love is like a fairytale <3
On Archie Bear: At first he was slightly suspicious of Archie Bear, but now that they've gotten to know each other better, they've become good friends. Plus, they can lovingly bitch about Horry Bear when he PMSes.
Name: Archie Bear
In a past life, he was: Cheer Bear
Mission: He's here to provide the giggles, huggles and other assorted feel-good moments.
Personality: It really says something about these three Care Bear Sailors that the prone to panic, slightly neurotic Archie Bear is cheerful one of the bunch.
On Horry Bear: Horry Bear is his bestest friend and Archie Bear likes to alternately cheer him up and give him small doses of reality. He would do anything for Horry Bear, but this is Carealot so we don't have to worry about him doing angsty things like sacrificing his good name for Horry Bear and then heroicly dying. Mkay?
On Bush Bear: At first, he didn't get along with Bush Bear but now they have great times together, in which they plot to get Horry Bear drunk and dancing naked on the foredeck.

Tomorrow is the first day of Hornblower Appreciation Week!

What does this mean? *g* Just silliness from me. I noticed that I've been neglecting Mr. Hornblower of late in favour of everyone's favourite first lieutenant. Of course I will love Bush for ever and ever amen, but Hornblower was my first crush in the fandom and I love him dearly still! So - a whole week, dedicated solely to Horatio Hornblower himself, just to show my appreciation of him.

All that I can promise is that there will be at least one post each day for a week that focusses somehow on Hornblower *g* Anything from a random declaration of love to ficlets to icons to book or movie squee to anything at all! It all depends on how much time I have that day and how inspired my muses are.

Feel free to join in on the fun (actually, I'd love it if you wanted to join in!) - the more Hornblower love in the world, the better place it is!

It was the strangest of ironies, Bush thought, that the captaincy he had dreamt of would come at the price of the life he had loved at sea.

The silence of his office echoed. Today, someone had left a pistol behind, perfectly balanced and primed and loaded. Bush picked it up and weighed it thoughtfully in his hand for a moment. A dark despair stole over him as he held it, considering – and then the thing was being flung across the room to clatter harmlessly in the fireplace. Bush hid his face in his hands and despised himself for days.

quietcontrary: (Bush "& Horatio")
The tense unhappiness that had so consumed Hornblower of late had vanished as suddenly and completely as thunder after a storm. He often laughed now and joked easily with both the Comte and Marie – Bush listened to the endless flow of French which sounded strangely discordant to his ears. Ever thoughtful, the Comte had tried to include Bush in their conversations, but Bush knew that his halting French and awkward manners were out of place amongst their elegance.

Bush sat alone, stump throbbing and knee aching, and wondered that he should prefer the company of a boat to his captain.
